Southwest Research and Outreach Center RESEARCH Research program focused on nitrogen and water management practices, as elements of sustainable farming management systems, that are productive, profitable, and environmentally acceptable. Integration This research program provides integrated nitrogen and water management systems to balance agricultural productivity and profitability with environmental protection. A combination of in-field, edge of field, and downstream management practices are strategic areas for integrated nitrogen and water management. Nitrogen Nitrogen is one of the most important elements required in agricultural systems for plant and animal production. The correct amount of nitrogen optimizes crop yield and minimizes environmental loss while the incorrect amount, too much or too little, reduces profitability and excess amounts contribute to environmental degradation. In-field Research on nitrogen timing, source, and rate Edge of field Research on cover crops; natural and constructed wetlands; cropping systems Downstream Research on managed open-channel drainage systems (ditches) |
